All systems go for Marikana massacre’s 13th anniversary – SABC News

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) says all is set to mark the 13 years since 34 mineworkers were gunned down by police in Marikana tomorrow (16 August).

The mineworkers had gathered at the infamous Marikana koppie, demanding R12,500 monthly salary for lowest paid employees.

Ten other people were killed days preceding the 16 August 2012. They included police, security officers and mineworkers.

Scores others were wounded, whilst others were arrested.

Amcu Deputy President Phuthuma Manyathi says about 20,000 people are expected to attend the event, since it is happening over the weekend.

“Actually, a trend is that, if it falls over the weekend, particularly on Saturday, we expect at least 20,000 people. That has been the trend. If it’s during the week, there’s a lesser number; people are at work,” says Manyathi.
