WhatsApp evidence used to deny ‘KT’ Molefe bail – SABC News

The Alexandra Magistrates Court has turned down Katiso Molefe’s bail application. The Magistrate points to WhatsApp messages presented by the State, indicating that the alleged hitmen were waiting for payment on the day DJ Sumbody was killed.

The court also believes that Molefe could tamper with the investigations because of his influence.

Molefe was arrested at his home in Sandton last month and charged with the 2022 murders of Oupa Sefoka – better known as DJ Somebody and Hector Buthelezi, better known as DJ Vintos.

Reading his judgment on the bail application, Magistrate Reiner Boshoff mentions Katiso Molefe‘s influence and capabilities.

“Considering all facts and circumstances, before the court makes the judgment to find that the applicant failed to put exceptional circumstances justifying his release on bail. As I have highlighted, there are a number of concerning aspects not only linking the suspect to the crimes but also his circle of influence and capabilities. His application for bail is accordingly refused.”

Molefe appeared in disbelief when the judgment was handed down, while the National Prosecuting Authority said it was pleased with the outcome.

NPA Spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says, “as alluded, the evidence against the accused is overwhelming. We have substantiated our allegations, as the prosecution in court by giving evidence of how they are linked to the alleged offense. Amongst them are WhatsApp messages between accused one, two, and three. They were communicating with the applicant, who was in court today and denied bail. The one that we are alleging is the middleman who facilitated the payments to the accused person. We are welcoming the judgment.”

According to the Sefoka family, the Magistrate’s decision to deny bail is sending a strong message to criminals.

Sefoka family representative says, “izinkabi will not be tolerated. We have reached a point in our country’s history where we are not tolerant, where we are led by bullets. We cannot afford to have our people live in fear, whether it is a police officer, a prosecutor, a witness, or a whistleblower blower is being killed. We cannot allow disputes to be resolved with a bullet. We have to be able to engage and mediate as people.”

Molefe will be back in court on the 18th of September.
