Minister encourages women to break societal barriers to being leaders – SABC News

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has encouraged women to occupy leadership positions in professions traditionally dominated by men.

She delivered a keynote address at a Women’s Month Dialogue hosted by Unisa and the South African Women in Dialogue at Unisa’s main campus in Pretoria.

The gathering has brought together over 200 women from civil society, faith communities, business and government.

Kubayi emphasised the challenges faced by young women to occupy leadership roles.

“The first one, a lack of role models for women. Women have fewer opportunities to see women leaders that they can emulate because every sector – private, public and social – men dominate senior leadership positions. Our girl children are being raised as young women that are having less people to look up to as leaders. What they have in front of them, consistently is men who are in leadership positions.”
