Accused in 7-year-old Khayelitsha girl’s murder case abandon bail bid – SABC News
The couple accused of the murder of a seven-year-old girl from Kuyasa in Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats has abandoned their bail application, fearing for their safety.
The case in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court has been postponed until 22nd October for further investigation.
The accused could not secure accommodation with family and relatives as an alternate address.
The body of the child was found dumped in the area last month. It is suspected that she may have been raped before being killed.
The court has also heard that forensic evidence, including that the deceased’s DNA and postmortem results, are still outstanding.
The community leader, Lonwabo Mqina, says the couple is not welcome at their permanent address.
“Today, what actually transpired is that we were told great news that Odwa and Nokuthula, the perpetrators have actually abandoned their bail application and therefore they are going to remain in custody for the remainder of the court proceedings. And we are happy for that actually. It’s what we have been fighting for because we believe that criminals have got no place in our communities,” says Mqina.
