Traditional leaders dismiss LGE 2026 boycott – SABC News
Traditional leaders say they will not boycott next year’s Local Government Elections (LGE).
There have been reports that the leaders threatened to protest the elections if government fails to grant their demands.
National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders (NHTKL) concluded their imbizo in Boksburg on the East Rand.
NHTKL Deputy Chairperson Nkosi Langa Mavuso says they have proposed for the amendment of the constitution that will guarantee power, functions and protection of traditional leadership in the country.
Mavuso says, “Chapter 12 (of the Constitution) does not guarantee the recognition and powers of traditional leaders. Many countries like England, Norway that Democrats have been thriving with their loyalty been guaranteed. So in a way we can do the same as South Africa. I don’t think we will boycott elections but that will be irresponsible of us an institution. We will be part of the elections.”
