EXCLUSIVE | Father of slain Kgaogelo Nnonu speaks out: ‘Throw away the key’
Kgaogelo Nnonu Marota’s life was brutally ended, allegedly at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Mfana Ngwenya, in Hammanskraal in the North West on Thursday. Her father, Thabiso Seema, spoke to IOL about the tragic loss of his daughter.
Seema said he was informed of her death on Thursday morning.
“There was a protection order in place against him, but he was stalking her. In the affidavit, she wrote that he had threatened to pour petrol over her mother’s house and set it alight,” he said.
Seema believes Ngwenya poses a danger to society.
“I want justice. I think they should throw away the key to his cell. That guy must never come out because he also went to attack another girl. This is not someone who should be in the community,” he said.
He described Marota as an introverted, respectful and kind person.
“She would listen to me when I spoke to her, and she was humble,” Seema said.

He said he was not aware that his daughter had been in a relationship with the 26-year-old Ngwenya and only found out after the incident.
“I am beyond shocked to hear that she had a boyfriend. We were planning to take her to the Northern Cape for school. But unfortunately, this is the news I have since received… According to witnesses, she was stabbed around 1am,” he said.
Seema added that the relationship had ended in February.
Sabrina Walter, founder of women’s advocacy group Women For Change, expressed her devastation.
“Most disturbing is that, once again, a man felt so comfortable in his violence that he filmed her lifeless body and posted his confessions on social media,” she said. “It is unacceptable that hours later, such graphic and traumatic content remains online. Sharing these videos is not only deeply disrespectful, but it also retraumatises grieving families and communities.”
Walter said it was particularly tragic that the killing took place during Women’s Month.
“A time meant for honouring women has instead become another reminder of their daily brutalisation in a country that continues to fail in protecting them,” she said.
Police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh confirmed that Ngwenya was arrested in the early hours of Friday in Carousel View near Maubane.
“The suspect allegedly murdered his ex-girlfriend and attempted to kill his current girlfriend. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where she is receiving medical treatment. Following the incidents, the suspect posted the reasons behind his deeds on social media,” Myburgh said.
Ngwenya is expected to appear in the Temba Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 August, on charges of murder and attempted murder.
