Ekurhuleni fire crews contain major restaurant fire as fire incidents rise in region

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Department of Emergency Management Services on Tuesday morning attended to a scene of a burning double storey metal container used as a restaurant at the corner of Swartkoppies and Overbury roads on the outskirts of Alberton.

The fire caused extensive damage to both the top and bottom layers of the structure.

The City’s life-threatening Call Centre received the call and dispatched response teams from Alberton, Thokoza, and Palm Ridge.

DEMS Spokesperson, William Ntladi said: “Crews could identify heavy dense carbon smoke from a distance.

“Alberton firefighters, as primary responders, arrived first on scene, followed by Thokoza and Palm Ridge, respectively. Two water tankers, one industrial pumper, and one rescue tender fire engines were used from CoE,” he said.

“City of Johannesburg crews also arrived after with two industrial fire pumpers.”

Fifteen cylinders of Liquefied Petroleum Gas had to be taken out of the structure before they could burn due to the safety risk they pose when caught alight.

No casualties have been reported, as investigations into the cause of the fire commence.

IOL reported on four fire incidents in the Ekurhuleni region in the past few weeks: the Germiston Home Affairs office, the Greyhound Bus Depot in Jet Park, a man who was allegedly set alight in a shack and the fire which caught a triple-story residential building in Boksburg on Monday afternoon.

Three suspects have been arrested in relation to the Germiston Home Affairs fire incident; no arrests have been made in the Greyhound bus depot fire and the shack attack fire as investigations continue. The police have condemned acts of vigilantism and vowed to bring to justice those who perpetrate these crimes.
