British & Irish Lions captain Maro Itoje and his English Premiership side Saracens are landing in Durban ahead of a pre-season clash with the Sharks at Kings Park.
The 5 September fixture pits two of world rugby’s heavyweight clubs against one another in a unique north-vs-south warm-up that promises fireworks under the lights at The Shark Tank. It’s also a valuable hit-out for both squads as they sharpen up for the long campaigns ahead in the Premiership and United Rugby Championship.

But it won’t be all scrums and shuttle runs for the visitors. Saracens’ Durban tour will mix high-intensity training with a healthy dose of South African culture. The London club has lined up a safari, golf day and beach braai to strengthen bonds within the squad, while also throwing their weight behind local causes.
A visit to the Zululand Rhino Orphanage and kit donations to a community charity will ensure the trip leaves a footprint that lasts beyond the 80 minutes on Friday.
For the Sharks, it’s the perfect chance to test themselves against one of Europe’s most decorated outfits, while Durban’s rugby faithful get treated to some high-quality pre-season rugby before the real battles of the season begin.
By their own admission, Saracens were disappointed in their mid-table finish in the Premiership last season – with 10 wins from their 18 matches – and are eager to challenge defending champions Bath for the title this time around.
