Brakpan police Sergeant kills wife, injures her family before turning gun on himself
An inquest docket has been opened after the Brakpan Police Sergeant allegedly killed himself and his wife following a domestic dispute.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson, Lizzy Suping said the incident occurred on Monday, August 25, 2025.
Suping said that on the day in question, the Brakpan Police Station’s Station Commander reached out to the Sergeant, who was on assignment in Tsakane. The purpose of the call was to inform the Sergeant that a protection order, obtained by his wife, needed to be served on him.
“The Station Commander also requested the Sergeant to hand over his firearm at the police station and provide proof afterwards,” said Suping.
She added that the wife decided to go to her parents’ home after an engagement with the police management at the station.
Suping said the Sergeant followed the wife to her parents’ home, where he allegedly fired shots that killed her, injured two children aged between 15 and 13, the wife’s mother, and their domestic worker.
“All those who survived were taken to various medical centres for treatment.”
After the incident, the Sergeant allegedly fled the crime scene in his car and was located in Secunda, Mpumalanga, through a tracking device.
“It is further alleged that when he realised that the police were on his trail, he turned the gun on himself killing himself,” added Suping.
Meanwhile, at the Brakpan crime scene, 15 cartridge cases were discovered together with eight bullet fragments, one live bullet and two five-litre bottles of petrol.
