Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says plans are afoot for a major expansion of the Gautrain system to areas including Soweto, Fourways, Roodepoort and Mamelodi, amongst others.

Lesufi was speaking during a media feedback session in Johannesburg where he shared the key outcomes of the recent Executive Council Lekgotla.

Lesufi says the Gautrain expansion plan is aimed at connecting all areas of the province though the high-tech rail system.

“We have also taken a decision to go back to the market to open up for preferred bidders who will expand the Gautrain to Soweto, Mamelodi, Fourways and Roodepoort and also embark on a study to explore to connect smart cities like Lanseria and also to go to Sedibeng in the Vaal to ensure that every part of our province in connected through Gautrain.”
