Allandale Prison escape ends in tragedy as inmate found dead

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that an inmate who escaped from Allandale Correctional Centre in the Western Cape on Tuesday has been found dead.

“The offender was part of the Agricultural span when he made his escape. He was serving a 12-year sentence for three counts of assault and theft, having been admitted on August 29, 2023,” said department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

The inmate, identified as Graine Martin, fled while working outside the facility.

An intensive search operation was launched, involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and members of the community.

According to the DCS, Martin was discovered deceased a short while later. Preliminary findings suggest he took his own life by hanging. The matter has been reported to SAPS, which has opened an inquest.

The department added that “a full-scale investigation is to be instituted to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape and subsequent death of the offender.”
