Weather: Cold front moves in, rain across South Africa expected this week
A cold front moving in from the southwest will dominate South Africa’s weather from Monday through Wednesday, bringing a notable drop in temperatures, increased cloud cover, and isolated rain along coastal areas.
The week begins on a warm and fine note across most of the interior, with clear skies over central and western provinces including the Free State, North West, and Northern Cape. KwaZulu-Natal’s east coast will see isolated showers (30% chance), particularly around Durban and Port Shepstone, as moist onshore winds push in from the Indian Ocean.
While inland areas remain largely unaffected, cooler air begins to approach the Western Cape by late afternoon, signalling the arrival of the cold front.
“A cold front is expected to pass over the southern parts of the Western Cape on Monday, over the southern interior of Namakwa district, Northern Cape, and over the Central Karoo district (Western Cape),” SAWA said.
The cold front sweeps across the southern parts of the country, ushering in significantly cooler conditions. The Western Cape, southern Northern Cape, and southern Eastern Cape become cloudy with isolated 30% chance of rain, especially around Worcester, Sutherland, and coastal towns.
The interior, including areas like Bloemfontein and Kimberley, turns cooler under partly cloudy skies. KwaZulu-Natal continues to experience light, isolated 30% rain along the coast, as fresh winds persist. The front begins to weaken as it moves east, but its influence on temperatures remains clear.
The remnants of the cold front linger over the eastern half of the country, maintaining cool to cold conditions across most regions. Cloudy skies dominate the Eastern Cape highlands, KwaZulu-Natal, and parts of the Free State.
Isolated 30% rain chances continue along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline and nearby inland areas such as Newcastle and Port Shepstone. Much of the interior remains dry and cool, with a mix of sun and cloud from Gauteng down through the Northern Cape.
