On 19 September 2015, Japan stunned the rugby world by pulling off the biggest upset in World Cup history – toppling the Springboks in Brighton.

The Boks were widely expected to open their campaign with a routine victory over the 13th-ranked Brave Blossoms. Instead, they were left shell-shocked as the match hurtled into stoppage time with their lead cut to just three points and only 14 men on the field.

Japan had spurned a late shot at goal that could have secured a draw, opting instead for a 5m scrum. Seven tense phases later, No 8 Amanaki Mafi powered through Jesse Kriel’s tackle in midfield before sending replacement wing Karne Hesketh diving over in the left-hand corner.

As Hesketh touched down to seal an unforgettable 34-32 triumph, the Japanese players erupted in joy while the Boks stood frozen – witnesses to what would forever be remembered as The Brighton Miracle.
