‘A devastating loss to the taxi industry’: Gauteng MEC condemns killing of NTA chairperson
The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has expressed shock and sadness at the killing of Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (NTA) chairperson Thamsanqa Moyo, who was gunned down while driving along the Soweto Highway on Friday afternoon.
Diale-Tlabela condemned the incident as a “senseless act of violence” that had robbed the taxi industry of a committed leader.
“This is a devastating loss to the taxi industry and to Gauteng as a whole. Mr Moyo was a leader who played an important role in shaping dialogue within the industry and promoting stability. His untimely death is a blow to ongoing efforts to build peace, unity, and sustainable solutions within the taxi sector,” she said.
The MEC extended her condolences to Moyo’s family, friends, colleagues, and the leadership of the NTA. She also urged law enforcement agencies to act decisively.
“We cannot allow criminal elements to derail progress in the taxi industry through acts of intimidation and violence. We call for calm, restraint, and cooperation as investigations unfold,” she added.
Diale-Tlabela said the provincial government remained committed to working with all stakeholders to build a safer, more reliable, and peaceful taxi industry in Gauteng.
She is expected to visit Moyo’s family on Saturday to personally extend her condolences and offer support.
Through the visit, the MEC said she hoped to “honour the memory of Mr Moyo and stand in solidarity with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
