Immigration status not a factor in school allocations – SABC News

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) says citizenship or immigration status is not a determining factor in the allocation of school spaces.

This follows a campaign launched by Operation Dudula in Soweto calling for schools to prioritise South African learners over foreign nationals.

GDE Spokesperson Steve Mabona says they’ve made it clear to Operation Dudula that admissions to public schools are governed by the Gauteng School Admissions Regulations.

“We consider citizens and those that have immigration status that is positive and for those who are undocumented, what we normally do is to encourage their parents to make sure that they adhere to the laws of the country and make sure that they bring the necessary documentation when those children as are placed. The disadvantage is if you do not have the proper documents, the child may not be resulted after writing their Grade 12.”

Meanwhile last month, MPs in the Social Security Cluster cautioned against any forceful restriction of foreign nationals to health facilities and schools.
