National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says the motive to disband the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), became clear when murder accused Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala was arrested.

Matlala has been linked to Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, General Shadrack Sibiya.

He is one of the alleged criminal figures who are believed to have infiltrated law enforcement agencies.

Testifying at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria, Masemola says although there was an attempt to disband the PKTT, it continues to operate, with police in a process of establishing another unit in Gauteng

“After the arrest of Matlala on the 14 May 2025 it became clear as to what was the objective of the disbandment. The team is still working even currently we are going to beef it up. Gauteng also we are in the process of establishing a PKTT for the province.”
