Stormers scrum wizard on Bok standby

The Springboks’ emphatic 67-30 victory over Argentina in Durban has come at a cost, with Rassie Erasmus possibly having to draft in some reinforcements for the return Test at Twickenham.

The bonus-point triumph catapulted the world champions to the top of the standings, one point clear of the All Blacks, but Erasmus confirmed that the bruising clash left several players nursing knocks.

“Thomas [du Toit] has an ankle niggle, so we might draft in Neethling Fouché, and Vincent [Koch] will go with us on tour. We’ll see how Ox [Nche] is doing on Monday to see if he’s back in the mix and assess Thomas’ ankle,” Erasmus explained at the post-match media conference.

“Damian [Willemse] suffered a hamstring [injury], Cheslin [Kolbe] injured his shoulder, and Ethan [Hooker] has an ankle niggle.”

Makazole Mapimpi and Handré Pollard are set to rejoin the squad, with Grant Williams fit again and Nche expected to be available. However, Erasmus suggested Fouché – currently with the Stormers – could be called up if Du Toit’s ankle doesn’t recover in time.

“Argentina also suffered many injuries, but this group will go as is. If possible, we’ll call on Neethling as he might be that side [with the Stormers] if needed,” he said.

The Boks and Los Pumas fly to London on Monday, with the final round clash potentially a title decider. Depending on the outcome of the earlier match between Australia and New Zealand, victory at Twickenham could be enough for South Africa to lift the Rugby Championship crown thanks to their superior points difference.
