Gwarube to meet KZN leaders over education crisis – SABC News
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube is expected to meet with KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli as well as the MECs for Education and Finance, over the dire situation the province’s education department finds itself in.
Gwarube will be discussing the department’s financial challenges while looking at a recovery plan.
In June, exams were disrupted as unions embarked on a work-to-rule action because no-fee schools weren’t paid their grants.
Principals and teachers couldn’t afford to keep the schools running out of their own pockets anymore.
The provincial Treasury made R900m available for the schools to reopen. However, Treasury took over the department’s finances in August.
