R81 Limpopo Crash: 12 killed in horror collision involving minibus taxi and trucks
Twelve people have lost their lives in a devastating crash on the R81 in Ga-Sekgopo in Limpopo on Sunday afternoon, when a minibus taxi collided with two trucks.
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba described the incident as causing ‘profound shock and sorrow.’
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collision, which has left several families facing the painful task of identifying their loved ones.
Limpopo Emergency Medical Services and rescue teams remained on the scene late on Sunday, clearing the wreckage and managing the aftermath.
“The news of this tragic accident is deeply touching, particularly when we consider the mothers and families affected by this loss. The provincial government stands in solidarity with the families during this difficult time, and we are committed to providing them with the necessary support,” said Ramathuba.
The premier is expected to meet the bereaved families at noon on Monday, September 29, at the Pietersburg Hospital Recreation Hall to assist with the identification of the deceased.
She will be accompanied by MEC for Transport and Community Safety Violet Mathye and the MEC for Health Dieketseng Mashego.
The Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed the R81 was reopened shortly after midnight on Sunday and will provide regular updates on the investigation.
“We urge all road users to exercise caution and adhere to safety regulations. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the need for greater awareness on our roads,” added Ramathuba.
