Emergency services on alert as KwaZulu-Natal faces severe weather conditions
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Disaster Management Centre, in collaboration with local emergency services, is actively responding to an array of weather-related incidents triggered by heavy rainfall that commenced on Sunday and is projected to continue through Tuesday.
The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a Level 4 weather warning for severe thunderstorms in the region.
So far, no major incidents have been reported, but the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has called on residents to exercise extreme caution.
“Roads are slippery, and several low-lying areas are at risk of localised flooding. We appeal to all road users and communities to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone zones,” Buthelezi said.
On Monday, in Pietermaritzburg when a bakkie was swept off a low-lying bridge in Lincoln Meade. Thankfully, the driver was able to swim to safety, highlighting the perils that accompany attempts to navigate flooded areas.
MEC Buthelezi reiterated the critical advice against crossing flooded bridges or rivers, as these actions can pose serious risks to life and safety.
In a separate incident, emergency services demonstrated their readiness and effectiveness by swiftly responding to a factory fire also in Pietermaritzburg.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the fire was contained without further incident, showcasing the commendable efforts of local fire and rescue teams.
The Level 4 weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service indicates that residents may experience strong, damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours.
These severe weather conditions not only threaten infrastructure but also heighten risks to public safety. Disaster Management teams are diligently monitoring at-risk areas to preemptively address any emergent crises.
Officials are urging residents to stay informed by keeping abreast of updates from local authorities and to report any emergencies to their respective local services.
The collaboration between community members and emergency services is crucial in mitigating risks and ensuring the safety of everyone during this challenging weather period.
