Advocate Matthew Chaskalson SC has been appointed Chief Evidence Leader of the Madlanga Commission, replacing Advocate Terry Motau SC, who unexpectedly stepped down just days into the role.

The sudden leadership change comes as the Commission into allegations of Criminality and Corruption within the Criminal Justice System, ramped up its high-profile public hearings into alleged political interference, corruption, and criminal infiltration of key law enforcement agencies.

Motau’s exit, less than two weeks after taking up the pivotal post, has raised eyebrows, especially as the inquiry delves into explosive claims involving drug cartels, criminal syndicates, and top brass within SAPS and intelligence circles.

“The Commission will not be distracted,” said the commission.

“The Commission remains firmly committed to fulfilling its mandate, which is of critical importance to upholding the rule of law in our country.”

The official reasons for Motau’s swift departure remain undisclosed but insiders suggest the move may be linked to the immense workload, or intense political sensitivity behind closed doors.

The Commission, which began public hearings on September 17 after a short logistical delay, operates with a lean team of 25 to 30 staff members.

Despite its size, it carries one of the most serious investigative mandates since the Zondo Commission—aimed squarely at rooting out deep-seated corruption and criminal interference in the justice system.

Meanwhile, SAPS national head of Crime Intelligence, Lt-Gen. Dumisani Khumalo is scheduled to resume testimony before the Commission on Tuesday.

His earlier appearances have already hinted at systemic rot and underworld influence at senior levels of law enforcement.
