ANC pays tribute to 'committed cadre' Nathi Mthethwa

The African National Congress (ANC) has paid tribute to Nathi Mthethwa, who was found dead in France on Tuesday.

The death of Mthethwa, 58, South Africa’s ambassador to France, was confirmed by the Ministry of International Relations and Co-operation.

The ministry said that French authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to his death. IOL reported earlier on Tuesday that according to French media reports, the 58-year-old diplomat’s body was discovered outside the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile in the Porte Maillot district.

Mthethwa was officially reported missing on Monday evening.

Apart from being an ambassador, Mthethwa also served as Minister of Police and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.

In a statement issued by ANC national spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu, the ANC said it was deeply saddened by the news of Mthethwa’s death.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and comrades during this difficult time. Comrade Mthethwa was not merely a public official; he was a committed cadre of the liberation struggle and a dedicated servant of the people in our democratic era. His life was one of both struggle and service. From the years of resistance, clandestine work, and sacrifice, Comrade Mthethwa contributed to the collective efforts that won our democracy.

“His presence will be sorely missed in our ranks, but his legacy endures: in the policies he advanced, the institutions he helped build, and the values he upheld. We pledge to support his family in their grief, and to honour him by redoubling our efforts to build the South Africa he believed in, a National Democratic Society,” the ANC said.

Mthethwa is survived by his wife and children.
