Parliament active in promoting SA’s foreign policies: Didiza – SABC News
The National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza says Parliament has been very active in promoting the country’s foreign policies and diplomatic engagements on global platforms.
She was speaking during a media briefing of the 11th Speakers’ Summit in Hermanus in the Western Cape.
South Africa is hosting the Summit ahead of the G20 meeting in the country in November.
Didiza says the national legislature has never shied away from representing the country’s interests at an international level.
She says, “Parliament actually is part of the multilateral forum. We participate with other members and that is one of the forums that allows us to influence, you to know, the international agenda, but also to share experiences with other parliamentarians globally. ”
Didiza says, “It also enables us as part of those platforms to be part of the critical areas of interventions. You will recall that in the past three years, South Africa was part of the team that was led through the IPU (Inter-Parliamentary Union) to engage with both the Russian and the Ukrainian parliaments to try and see whether there can’t be an opportunity for a peace settlement. ”
