Gauteng officer denied bail after shooting friend in tavern fight

A police officer from Gaunteng accused of the murder of his friend was denied bail by the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court.

Constable Tshepiso Lloyd Malapane, 33, appeared in court this week for the murder of his friend Lebogang Sekhute, 27, who tried to intervene in a tavern squabble in Soweto last month.

Spokesperson for Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Phaladi Shuping said that Malapane, who was stationed at Dobsonville SAPS, was drinking with his friend at a tavern in Pimville on 21 September when he had an altercation with one of the patrons.

He left but came back with his firearm.

“His friend tried to intervene and stop the fight, but Constable Malapane shot him several times, and he was declared dead by the paramedics,” said Shuping.

Malapane was arrested at the scene and detained at Kliptown SAPS. He made his first court appearance on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, and his case was postponed to a bail hearing on 1 October 2025.

“He was denied bail and the case was postponed to 05 November 2025 for further investigations,” said Shuping.
