Building a greener future in Limpopo: youth trained in renewable energy skills
The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) continues to open doors for young South Africans, this time by preparing them to take part in one of the fastest growing industries in the world—renewable energy. Recently, the EPWP hosted a 43-day Renewable Energy Training Programme at the Thabazimbi Cost Centre in Limpopo, equipping 19 learners with practical skills in solar energy technology.
The training forms part of the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) Skills Programme, accredited at NQF Level 4, and was facilitated by Sekhukhune Technical and Vocational Education and Training College. Over the course of the programme, participants received hands-on training in solar power installation, maintenance, and system design, as well as essential safety practices. These skills are vital not only in preparing them for employment opportunities but also in empowering them to become entrepreneurs in the renewable energy sector.
For South Africa, where the demand for sustainable and reliable power solutions is greater than ever, training young people in renewable energy technologies is more than a skills development initiative—it is an investment in the future. By equipping learners with the knowledge to design and maintain solar energy systems, the EPWP is helping communities reduce their reliance on the national grid, while also contributing to the fight against climate change.
