City Power seeks interdict against Hawks amid fraud allegations – SABC News
Johannesburg’s power distributor, City Power, has approached the Johannesburg High Court seeking an urgent interdict against the Hawks.
This follows a search and seizure operation carried out by the specialised police unit at City Power’s headquarters last week.
City Power is now challenging the legality of the operation, claiming it was unlawful and that the Hawks did not possess a valid warrant at the time. The urgent court application is expected to be heard at the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday morning.
However, a second request for documents that were allegedly already handed over to investigators has raised serious concerns, prompting City Power to pursue legal action.
The recent raid is reportedly linked to an irregular R67 million tender for the procurement of electrical transformers.
Mangena says, “Our court case is to challenge the validity of Hawks’ warrant and also to halt its execution. We were worried about how these searches and seizures were executed around City Power. In one instance, they did not have a warrant, so they came in and were looking for information. But also, is the staged manner in which they call the media to come with them so that they can make it look like it’s a raid, whereas they are here with one question about a certain contract.”
