Eight arrested in Fort Hare protests, no one yet charged for arson
Eight people have been arrested in connection with violent protests at the University of Fort Hare’s Alice campus, and have already made their first appearance in court.
Police confirmed that the suspects, aged between 22 and 33, were arrested on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, on charges of public violence and business burglary.
They appeared at the Alice Magistrate’s Court and are expected to return on November 26, 2025.
The protest began in the early hours of Monday and quickly escalated.
On Wednesday afternoon, several university buildings were set alight, including the administration block, student centre, auditorium, and the HIV centre.
Police responded with rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
No arrests have yet been made in connection with the arson or malicious damage to property, said Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa.
A student was also injured on Tuesday during the protest after jumping over a bridge. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, she said.
Police also confirmed that four security officials were held hostage during the unrest. They were later rescued by officers and were unharmed.
Mawisa said law enforcement would continue to maintain visibility on campus to restore order.
“Police are intensifying visibility and will not recline to maintain order and stabilize the situation. They will carry their mandate with dignity to ensure safety for all,” she said.
She added that investigations were ongoing and urged the public to assist.
“SAPS will ensure that the cases opened are thoroughly investigated and appeal to anyone with information on burning of buildings to come forward and report to the Alice Police Station or alternatively call SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111,” said Mawisa.
