The South African government has strongly condemned the deadly attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on 9 October 2025 in El Fasher, North Darfur, which targeted a hospital and a displacement centre, killing at least 20 people.

The assaults on civilian infrastructure have led to the tragic loss of innocent lives, left many severely injured, and worsened the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.

Authorities say thousands of civilians, including women and children, remain trapped by ongoing fighting. Sustained attacks since September on places of worship and the central market have further compounded the crisis, representing “a grave violation of international law.”

In a statement issued by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), South Africa expressed its solidarity with the people of Sudan, who continue to bear the brunt of the conflict.

“We remind all parties of their non-negotiable obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law. There must be no impunity for serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law,” Chrispin Phiri, the Ministry Spokesperson said. 

DIRCO emphasised the urgent need to protect civilians and safeguard critical infrastructure, calling for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian access, and the safe evacuation of civilians from active conflict zones.

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola reiterated that the only sustainable solution lies in a negotiated, inclusive, and Sudanese-owned political dialogue.

“We urge regional and international actors, including the African Union, the United Nations, and IGAD, to intensify efforts to broker a ceasefire and galvanize support for a just political settlement,” Lamola said.

South Africa also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at ending the suffering of the Sudanese people.
