Israel-Palestine peace deal won’t hamper ICJ case: Ramaphosa – SABC News
President Cyril Ramaphosa says that the peace deal that has been signed between Israel and Palestine will not have a bearing on the case that South Africa has filed against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The United States (US)-brokered deal sees a ceasing of hostilities, the exchange of hostages between the two protagonists and humanitarian aid allowed to flow into Gaza.
SA launched a case in the ICJ in which it alleged genocide against Palestinians in December 2023.
Ramaphosa says that while the country welcomes the deal, the healing that needs to take place that will also result from the ICJ’s case being properly heard.
He says, “The peace deal that has been struck, which we welcome, will have no bearing on the case that is before the International Court of Justice. As I said, the case is proceeding and it now has to go to the stage where Israel has to respond to our pleadings that have been filed in the court, and they have to do so by January of next year, well after the International Court of Justice will set a date for the evidence to be presented and tabled.”
