A senior official at Maruleng Municipality in Hoedspruit, Limpopo, has been arrested by the Hawks for alleged fraud and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.

Hawks Spokesperson Lethunya Mmuroa says the alleged fraudulent activities were committed in 2015 when the suspect was an acting municipal manager in the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality.

Mmuroa says the suspect allegedly paid more than R700,000 to a service provider who did not do any work.

The suspect is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
