Mozambican national jailed for raping 11-year-old neighbour
A Mozambican national who was living illegally in the country has been sentenced to 25 years in jail for raping an 11-year-old girl.
Alex Armand Dango, 35, was convicted and sentenced by the Boschfontein Regional Court this week.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Thulisile Magagula said Dango raped an 11-year-old girl who was his neighbour in Hectorspruit near Malelane in 2022.
“The accused entered the room during the day, when the victim was at home in her room, warming food to eat with her siblings, while her mother was at work.
He instructed the victim to undress, but she refused. He proceeded to take his clothes off and forcefully grab and rape the victim, and left,” said Magagula.
Magagula further stated that on another day in 2022, the victim was playing in her room when the accused entered, closed the door. He threatened to beat her with a stick he was holding if she made noise and proceeded to rape her.
“On Sunday, August 06 2023, while the victim was at home during the day, her mother approached her and said she had a bad dream about her.
She asked if something bad had happened to her and the victim then disclosed the rape incidents that had occurred.
A case was subsequently opened, and an investigation was conducted,” said Mgagula.
Dango was then arrested in Hectorspruit on 06 August 2023 and was identified by the victim at the time of arrest.
He remained in police custody for the duration of his trial as he was deemed a flight risk.
“He was in the country illegally and faced additional charges for contravening the Immigration Act,” said Magagula.
Police said he was cautioned for contravening the Immigration Act.
“His name was ordered to be entered into the Sexual Offenders Register, and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm. He was further declared unfit to work with children,” said Mgagula.
