KZN security boss arrested for the murder of a Primary School teacher in 2022



A 52-year-old KwaZulu-Natal security company owner has been arrested for the murder of a primary school teacher who was shot and killed on February 18, 2022.

Bruce Mhlongo is accused of killing 48-year-old Innocent Zondi who was a teacher at Khethindlelenhle Primary School. He was shot and killed inside his vehicle in the KwaPata area. 

KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda said when police arrived at the scene, Zondi was found sitting on the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds.

“At least 21 cartridges were found at the scene. The case was later referred to the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit which successfully acquired the warrant of arrest for the security company owner which was executed on Thursday,” he said.

Netshiunda added that Mhlongo is also likely to be linked to other cases of murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery which were committed in the areas of Plessislaer and Richmond from 2022.

Meanwhile, Netshiunda said police seized firearms from his company and will be subjected to ballistic analysis.

He briefly appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 17, 2025, and was remanded in custody.

He is expected back in court on October 30, 2025, where he will make a formal bid for bail.
