Minister pushes for more jobs through Vala Zonke Road programme – SABC News
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has emphasised that they will ensure employment-intensive road maintenance programmes are increased.
Creecy visited Mahikeng in the North West to monitor the progress of the repair and rebuilding of roads. This forms part of the Vala Zonke programme, which is aimed at improving the overall conditions of provincial and local roads.
A so-called “yellow fleet” valued at R80 million, which will be key to road maintenance in rural areas and farms, was also unveiled.
The Minister says they are collaborating with the local authorities in fixing roads in Mahikeng.
“We will be working on four streets, it is South street, its Martin street, its Proctor avenue, Pretorius street, and in each of these streets we are doing fundamental reconstruction of the road where we were not able to patch it in the previous financial year, let me say from the onset that the upgrades that we are doing here in the Mahikeng municipality is a partnership between SANRAL, together with the province and also together with the municipality,” says Creecy.
