Limpopo schools targeted in armed robberies: Laptops, airtime and cash taken
Police in Malamulele, Limpopo, have launched a manhunt for suspects following two separate robberies and burglaries at schools in the area.
According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the first incident occurred at Mahonisi Primary School in the early hours of Saturday, 25 October 2025, at around 3am.
A security guard on duty was attacked by four armed men wearing balaclavas.
“It is alleged that one of the suspects pointed a firearm at the security guard and fired a shot before overpowering and tying him up,” said Ledwaba.
“The suspects then took him to the administration block, broke into one of the offices, and forced open a safe.”
The suspects fled the scene with laptops, airtime vouchers, and an undisclosed amount of cash. The guard was later found locked inside the safe by the school principal in the morning.
In a separate incident, Humula High School in Mukhomi village was also targeted between Friday night and Saturday morning.
“The suspects broke into the administration block, ransacked several offices, and cut open a safe. Laptops were among the items stolen,” Ledwaba said.
Police have opened cases of business robbery and business burglary, and both incidents are being investigated by Sergeant Shadrack Mabunda of Malamulele SAPS.
Ledwaba condemned the attacks, particularly those targeting schools that serve rural communities.
“These criminal acts disrupt education and rob learners of valuable resources meant to support their studies. We are doing everything possible to bring the perpetrators to book,” he said.
He urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.
“Anyone with information can contact Sergeant Shadrack Mabunda on 063 447 7375, or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Tip-offs can also be shared anonymously via the My SAPS App,” Ledwaba added.
Police investigations are continuing.
