State calls witnesses as Mahungela pleads not guilty in Kluyts murder – SABC News

The trial of 21-year-old Bafana Mahungela, accused of the kidnapping, murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances of Johannesburg teacher Kirsten Kluyts, continues on Monday morning, at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in Ekurhuleni.

The trial had been postponed in recent weeks but is now set to continue with the State calling more witnesses to the stand. This includes runners who were at the George Lea Park MyRun event on October 29, 2023, when Kluyts was killed.

Mahungela has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Kluyts, a 34-year-old teacher at Delta Park High School, was found dead after her belongings were discovered near the running route.

She was 14 weeks pregnant.

A post-mortem determined she died from blunt-force head trauma and strangulation.

The accused was later arrested after CCTV footage allegedly showed him leaving the scene wearing her t-shirt. – Reporting by Luyanda Danca.
