Countdown to Cape2Rio: a journey of courage and competition

The excitement is building as the countdown begins for one of the most prestigious ocean races in the world. On 27 December 2025, the Cape2Rio fleet will set sail from the bustling shores of Cape Town, embarking on a challenging 3,300-nautical mile journey to the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro. This iconic race, first held in 1971, is set to draw world-class sailors from across the globe, reaffirming Cape Town’s status as a premier hub for ocean racing.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC), which has been at the forefront of this monumental event, expects a strong showing from both South African and international crews in 2025. Race Chairman Vitor Medina expressed the essence of the Cape2Rio: “The Cape2Rio has always been about testing human courage against the vastness of the Atlantic. In 2025, we celebrate the competitive spirit of international sailors and South Africa’s role as host.”

This edition of the race promises an exciting array of entries, including representatives from Brazil, with two boats—Audaz and Esperança—making their way from Porto Alegre to Cape Town. Both boats are anticipated to add a lively competitive spirit to the race, with Audaz having previously participated in the 2023 edition.

A notable highlight of the 2025 race is the inclusion of the Alexforbes Angel Wings, a youth development crew from the RCYC Sailing Academy. This team embodies resilience and hope, representing the next generation of South African sailors as they embark on this extensive transatlantic challenge.

Adding a unique flavour to the race, several entries are gearing up to raise awareness for various causes. For instance, Solitaire will be raising awareness for neurodivergence in support of Vista Nova schools, while Lifgun represents a solitary yet impactful entry hailing from Switzerland.

In an innovative partnership, the race will also collaborate with the International SeaKeepers Society, integrating a marine science and ocean awareness component into the event. All participating yachts will be outfitted with scientific devices designed to map the ocean floor, contributing essential data to international marine research efforts. This initiative exemplifies how sports can lead the charge for global environmental responsibility and marine conservation.

“As headline sponsor of Cape2Rio and supporter of the Angel Wings youth crew, Alexforbes is not only backing the race but is also instrumental in nurturing the next generation of South African sailors,” stated Viresh Maharaj, CEO of Alexforbes Retail. “Cape2Rio encapsulates the importance of planning, perseverance, and performance—qualities vital both on the ocean and in investing.”

City of Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, underscored the significance of the event, remarking, “Cape Town is proud to host Cape2Rio, one of the world’s most prestigious ocean races. This event showcases our city on the global stage and celebrates its vibrant maritime culture and heritage.”

With the race rapidly approaching, fans and supporters are invited to witness the historic send-off in Cape Town and to track the fleet’s progress online through cape2riorace.com. It is an event that promises to combine adventure, camaraderie, and the spirit of competition, echoing with every wave encountered on the journey to Rio.
