Ekurhuleni Mayor to inspect OR Tambo Airport ahead of G20 Summit – SABC News
Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza will on Tuesday inspect the OR Tambo International Airport ahead of the G20 Summit taking place in Johannesburg next month.
The airport, named after liberation struggle icon Oliver Tambo, will receive most of the international delegates attending the summit.
Ekurhuleni authorities say the inspection aims to ensure the airport is ready to welcome guests and showcase the city as a gateway to the world.
Head of Communications, Marketing and Tourism for Ekurhuleni, Phakamile Mbengashe, says the city is also playing host to one of the key side events.
“Today, the Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Councillor Nkosindiphile Doctor Xhakaza, is going to do a walkthrough of OR Tambo Airport. You already know this is the busiest airport in Africa, so it’s important that we make sure the venue is clean and presentable, because we’ll be the first impression to most of the delegates when they arrive here. We’re also hosting the G20 Social Summit. I think it’s quite important that we play a role as a place where people can talk about the future. We hosted Codesa back in the days, and now we’re hosting the social summit, so we’re proud as a city that we’re playing a central role in this G20.”
