US confirms refugee admissions cap of 7 500, lowest in history – SABC News

A report by the Washington Post says US President Donald Trump’s plan to overhaul the country’s refugee resettlement process would largely see accommodations made for white Afrikaners South Africans.
According to the publication’s review of documents, the plan would see a drastic reduction in overall annual admissions, but with a concerted effort to prepare thousands of White South Africans for relocation to the United States.
If successful, the Post reports that as many as 7000 out of a total pool of 7500 admissions would be set aside for Afrikaners.
The refugee cap of 125 000 admissions annually under the previous Biden administration, including refugees from the DRC and Afghanistan, has since been shelved under President Trump.
The Washington Post report followed a recent New York Times piece that the Trump administration was considering a radical overhaul of the US refugee system that would slash the programme to its bare bones while giving preference to English speakers, white South Africans and Europeans who opposed migration.
The Post, quoting sources, reports that the State Department had set a goal of processing 2000 Afrikaners for resettlement by the end of this month and an additional 4000 by the end of November, but that the process was unfolding more slowly, including due to Afrikaners changing their minds about relocating.
President Trump issued Executive Orders soon after taking office, suspending all refugee admissions while prioritising Afrikaners over alleged human rights concerns.
