Orient Islamic School girls volleyball team crowned champions in Johannesburg

The Orient Islamic School (OIS) U16 Girls Volleyball Team have etched their name into the record books after an undefeated run at the American International School of Johannesburg Volleyball Tournament, where they were crowned U16 Division Champions.

In what was their first-ever tournament outside Durban, the young athletes went against some of the toughest teams in South Africa. The event featured 32 schools, over 350 players, and 95 matches played across six courts.

Their journey began with a defining victory over Cathula, the defending national champions, setting the tone for a dominant campaign. The team went on to defeat an international side from Tanzania, before facing off against Michaelmount Waldorf, the 2024 champions, in a tense semi-final.

The final match brought them head-to-head once more with Cathula with the team sealing the championship title without losing a single match.

Coach Aneesah Loonat credited the victory to discipline and mindset.

“The girls never lost focus. They trained consistently, supported each other, and gave every game their all. This win proves what’s possible when commitment meets teamwork,” she said.

Team standout Asmaa Jadwat, who also represents the KZN shadow squad, shared her approach to balance and performance.

“Balance comes from good time management and discipline. I plan my days and make time to rest so I can give my best in both sports and academics,” said Asmaa.

Teammate Atiyyah Amojee reflected on the team’s growth over the years.

“I am incredibly proud of how far the team has come. In 2022, we lost our very first league but we never gave up. From practising during lunch breaks to using every bit of free time we had, with teamwork, dedication, and great guidance, we turned that loss into a victory,” said Atiyyah.

Team captain Zahraa Seedat celebrated the historic nature of the achievement.

“I am proud of our team for making history as the first Muslim school to win this tournament. We faced many strong teams along the way, but through hard work, unity, and faith, we achieved something truly special. I am grateful and honoured to be part of this incredible journey,” said Zahraa.

Player Maadia Gadit highlighted the value of the experience beyond just the wins.

“Watching other teams play and learning from them was such a valuable experience. Whether we went in to win or lose, we knew every match was a chance to grow and learn from. Now we are excited and ready for the KZN Round 3 Championship coming up. We are honoured to have won every match we played at this tournament,” said Maadia.

The team is preparing for the KZN Champs playoffs on November 29 at Sharks Outspan Grounds, where the top five teams in the region will battle for the title.
