Thunder and chill: Heavy rain set to drench central, eastern South Africa this weekend
It’s going to be a cold, wet weekend for the central and eastern parts of the country, with an intense weather system expected to make landfall from Saturday until Monday.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said the cut-off low-pressure system is expected to bring widespread rainfall and severe thunderstorms.
“This poses a risk of flooding in some areas. The severe thunderstorms are expected to produce strong, damaging winds with large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning. There will also be a significant drop in daytime temperatures,” the forecaster warned.
According to SAWS, on Saturday, cold and wet weather is expected across the North West, Free State, eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal. This weather pattern is expected to continue into Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KZN from Sunday into Monday.
SAWS is sending a stern warning to farmers and other stakeholders to monitor weather updates and take the necessary precautions.
