China plans to reshape robotics’ landscape

China’s ambitions to lead the world in humanoid robotics are on display at the China Hi-Tech Fair in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen is home to some of China’s biggest tech firms and robots are a big feature at this tech fair.

One crowd pleaser is seeing robots kickbox.

While there are a few stumbles, this is a demonstration of China’s ambitions.

That is what is on display, from singing robots to robots folding your clothes, to robots playing piano.

China is leading in robot hardware, policy support and it has a strong manufacturing base.

With startup DeepSeek’s model, it’s also showing that Chinese algorithms are catching up with the US.

And it’s betting big on advance tech. Earlier this year, China announced it would invest more than 130 billion dollars in robotics and high tech in the next two decades.

And companies are responding to that enthusiasm.

The world’s second largest economy is eager to deploy this technology and soon. China has a rapidly aging population. It hopes to address its labour shortages with AI and robotics solutions.

In its recent five-year plan, Beijing elevated science and technology as key pillars with a focus on artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.

Experts say this is Beijing signaling a renewed focus on self-reliance. President Xi Jinping is betting this approach will ensure China’s economic resilience amid intensifying competition.

People here say it may be a while until humanoid robots are part of our daily lives. But there is no doubt the advances taking place here are reshaping the landscape of robotics.

And China is hoping to deliver the knockout punch. – Reporting by Laura Westbrook
