Police fatally shoot armed suspect during vehicle theft in Durban CBD

A shooting occurred on Joe Slovo Street involving police and a suspect. The incident began when the suspect, who had a stolen vehicle, attempted to shoot at the police.

Residents reported hearing a large shooting incident in the early morning. According to Thembinkosi Ntshangase, the shooting scared residents.

“I heard several gunshots and the police sirens. No one attempted to look because we were afraid; we didn’t even know where the firearms were aimed at,” he said.

Kyle van Reenen, a spokesperson for Ensure Security, said the incident unfolded after police attempted to stop a vehicle believed to be stolen and wanted by authorities.

“The suspect driving the vehicle allegedly opened fire on police and attempted to evade arrest. He was driving erratically,” he added.

The spokesperson further explained that the suspect later abandoned the vehicle and forcibly attempted to steal a SAPS patrol vehicle.

“Police pursued the suspect to the vicinity of the Butterworth Hotel, where further warnings were issued for him to surrender,” he further elaborated.

An exchange of gunfire followed as the suspect reportedly continued firing at police officers. He sustained fatal wounds and was declared deceased at the scene.

The Ensure Security briefed that the Security Delta Teams secured the area and supported SAPS during the incident. They commend the coordinated response and urge members of the public to avoid the area while authorities complete their work.

“The scene has been handed over to SAPS for further investigation and processing,” said van Reenen.
