Facebook Marketplace murder: Woman arrested after two months on the run
In a dramatic turn of events, a 23-year-old woman, Ashiekah Naidoo, has been arrested in connection with a Facebook Marketplace scam that allegedly led to the murder of Mogamat Yusuf Daniels, just one week before his planned wedding.
Naidoo voluntarily surrendered to authorities on Wednesday, following a public appeal for information about her whereabouts, according to sources from the Cape Argus’s sister publication, Daily Voice.
Naidoo is set to make her first appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, amidst mounting evidence that places her at the centre of a tragic incident that unfolded on 24 September.
Family members of the victim have claimed that Naidoo is the alleged mastermind behind the horrific crime.
The case began to unfold when 29-year-old Daniels intended to sell his phone via Facebook Marketplace to raise funds for his upcoming nuptials.
Tragically, what began as a routine transaction evolved into a deadly meeting, as two women contacted Daniels and orchestrated a rendezvous at a garage in Ottery.
Initial investigations revealed that the meeting resulted in Daniels’ untimely death, a grim outcome that has shaken the community and left his family in mourning.
His uncle, Abduragman Jacobs, expressed relief at Naidoo’s arrest, which he described as a turning point. “All praise to God. She was on the run for two months, and the minute she was in the media there was no hiding. When I heard she was arrested, it was amazing news. It was a relief,” Jacobs stated.
Jacobs further articulated the frustration felt by the family, as Naidoo allegedly continued to live her life, active on social media while avoiding capture: “They had her, and it was like a cat and mouse game. Now we will hear all her excuses that she will make up for what she has done.”
In this developing case, another accused, Morte Nelson, has already appeared in court for a bail hearing, which has been postponed until 28 November. A third suspect, Monray Martin, remains hospitalised under police guard after sustaining injuries during the same incident.
