Defence witness in Meyiwa case claims police assaulted him
Defence witness in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Sifiso Gwabini Zungu, says he was assaulted multiple times by the police and questioned about accused number one Muzi Sibiya’s alleged involvement in the killing.
Zungu is testifying at the High Court in Pretoria, where five men are on trial for the murder of the Bafana Bafana captain in 2014.
According to testimony by State key witness Constable Sizwe Zungu, Gwabini hosted a gathering at a hostel in Vosloorus, which was allegedly attended by all five accused.
Gwabini Zungu has dismissed Constable Zungu’s claims as lies.
Responding to defence counsel Charles Mnisi, Gwabini Zungu says he was taken by the police in 2020 and assaulted – suffocated, lost consciousness and even taken to a cemetery.
Mnisi asked, “Now you regained your consciousness, as you realise that you are wet?”
Gwabini Zungu replied: “I cried out and a particular vehicle stopped. They even peeped through or looked out. They took me, put me in the vehicle, took me down to the cemetery. That’s where they assaulted me up until four in the morning.”
Mnisi: This injury that you showed court the one on your arm, where did you sustain that injury
Gwabini: At the municipal area
Mnisi: And then you arrive at the cemetery, you said in June?
Gwabini: It was winter
