Key witness in Booysen trial pressed on statement inconsistencies

The trial of alleged underworld crime boss Jerome Booysen has concluded for the day in the Western Cape High Court, where key witness Mr X testified.

The witness cannot be identified. The State has been going through Mr X’s bail record from the time of his arrest in relation to his involvement in the murder of steroid smuggler, Brian Wainstein, to becoming a Section 204 witness.

State Prosecutor Mervyn Menigo interrogated inconsistencies in Mr X’s previous statements, as he confirmed that he has no recollection of signing statements made to police on the day of his arrest on the 25th of November 2017, while acknowledging that the signatures in questions are in fact his.

Earlier, today, the court also heard that Mr X had initially started providing security services for Wainstein, before he was requested to start selling steroids for Wainstein.

The State is going through Mr X’s bail record from the time of his arrest in relation to his involvement in the murder of Wainstein, to becoming a section 204 witness.

Booysen and 11 others face several charges, including the 2017 murder of Wainstein.

Court resumes with more testimony from Mr X tomorrow.
