Crawford Fraser, prominent Khoisan chief and advocate, dies at 51
Khoisan Paramount chief Crawford Fraser has died, the Indigenous Khoi-San Leadership of SA (IKSLOSA) said on Tuesday.
Fraser died due to natural causes, IKSLOSA president HIRM King Prof KidiKoeriKoei‑Inqua Jeremy Saffier told IOL over the phone.
The 51-year-old was a long-time campaigner for the rights and recognition of Khoi and San communities.
Fraser made headlines in 2019 when he was arrested in Nelson Mandela Bay’s northern areas for taking part in a protest against gangs.
In a public statement, IKSLOSA said Fraser “left an indelible mark on SA’s journey toward inclusive equality”.
He spent decades advocating for Indigenous land rights, cultural preservation, and the social and political recognition of SA’s First Nations, Saffier said.
Saffier said many saw Fraser as a steady and determined leader whose work helped bring the issues of historically marginalised communities into national attention.
He was involved in grassroots organising, public advocacy, and national consultations, including travelling from Gqeberha to Pretoria three years ago to make submissions to the Commission on Khoi-San Matters when it first opened for Indigenous leaders.
Saffier said: “His courage, wisdom, and love for his people inspired all who had the privilege of his presence.
“We mourn his loss and will continue to carry forward his legacy of resilience and advocacy.”
Nelson Mandela Bay’s DA caucus leader Rano Kayser said Fraser was a community activist who put the interests of his people first.
“He was a relentless advocate for the recognition and rights of the Khoi and San, and a humble servant whose life’s work was rooted in dignity, inclusion, and justice,” he said.
“I was honoured to receive recognition on behalf of the Khoisan, handed to me by Chief Crawford … it was a moment I will always treasure.”
Kayser said his passing was a big loss.
“May his legacy continue to inspire us, and may his family and community find comfort during this difficult time.”
Fraser’s memorial service will take place at the Chatty Community Centre on Thursday,
