Tshwane residents cautioned after partially treated effluent found in Rietvlei Dam
The City of Tshwane has called on its residents not to panic following the detection of partially treated effluent in the Rietvlei Dam.
The metro says the effluent was detected entering through its downstream the Sesmyl Spruit. The metro has urged residents not to fish or consume water from the dam while an assessment is being conducted.
The assessment includes comprehensive water quality testing and onsite monitoring.
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo elaborates, “The City of Tshwane wishing to notify residents and stakeholders that a partially treated effluent has been detected entering the Rietvlei Dam via the Sesmylspruit. At this stage there is no need for alarm and the situation is closely managed by the relevant departments. Comprehensive water quality testing and onsite monitoring are currently under way to determine the extent source and potential contamination.”
Mashigo adds, “Residents are advised that any activities undertaken at the dam are done so at their own risk. Our team are working with environmental specialists to stabilise the situation and ensure that all necessary precautionary measures are undertaken.”
