Are Durban's beaches ready and safe for 1.3 million festive season visitors?
Durban is fully prepared to welcome 1.3 million visitors this festive season, with swimming facilities along the beachfront now ready and operational, according to the eThekwini Municipality
The city has completed maintenance and refilling of all swimming pools along the promenade, including the Children’s Amusement Centre pool, South Beach paddling pool and Laguna swimming pool, ensuring a safe environment for bathers.
Repairs have also been finalised at two facilities in Illovu and Asherville, allowing them to reopen after suffering extensive damage.
In a statement released on Monday, the municipality assured that bathing beaches are safe for swimming.
“The beach water quality continues to be constantly monitored by a team of expert scientists at all beaches to ensure that Durban complies with water quality and safety standards. At present, all 23 bathing beaches are safe for swimming after tests were conducted.”
Beachgoers are urged to follow safety rules as enforcement increases for the holiday period. The city has reminded visitors that swimming under the influence of alcohol is prohibited and that instructions from lifesavers, law enforcement officers and pool supervisors must be obeyed.
Residents and tourists have also been warned that jumping off piers is banned due to the extreme danger it poses.
The municipality says it is confident that Durban will deliver another vibrant and enjoyable festive season experience for locals and holidaymakers.
