Mpumalanga farmers and cops chase and recover Toyota Fortuner stolen in KwaZulu-Natal
Two foreign nationals have been arrested after police in Amersfoort, working with local farmers, intercepted a reportedly stolen Toyota Fortuner on the N11 in Mpumalanga.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe said officers acted on information from the Rural Safety Partnership, made up of farmers in the area, which led to the recovery of the Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6.
The vehicle had been reported stolen in Pinetown in November.
Police said officers spotted the SUV on the N11 on Wednesday, with farmers already pursuing it. When the suspects realised they had been intercepted, they allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Officers, assisted by the farmers, chased and apprehended the two men, aged 43 and 45. They were charged with possession of suspected stolen property and contravention of the Immigration Act.
The pair is expected to appear in the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Mpumalanga’s acting provincial commissioner of police, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the collaboration between police and the farming community, saying the incident demonstrated the value of strengthened partnerships in combating crime in the province.
