Emergency Water Release from Hazelmere Dam to Mitigate Flood Risks
In response to heavy rains in certain parts of KwaZulu-Natal, uMngeni-uThukela Water has initiated the release of water from the Hazelmere Dam. The release, beginning at 8 am on Friday, December 29, 2023, will continue until a safe operating water level is achieved. This measure is crucial to prevent the potential flooding of residences situated upstream of the dam.
Recent assessments of streamflow and dam levels reveal a significant surge in inflows into Hazelmere, causing the dam level to rise exponentially. Currently standing at 85%, the heightened water level poses an imminent risk of flooding for homes located within the flood line upstream of the dam.
Umngeni-uThukela Water, managing the dam on behalf of the Department of Water and Sanitation, has taken the decisive step of releasing water on an emergency basis to bring the dam level in compliance with established operating rules.
The water released from Hazelmere Dam flows into the Mdloti River, resulting in a substantial rise. This increased river flow carries inherent risks of drowning or being swept away for individuals attempting to cross during this period.
The public is strongly urged to exercise caution and refrain from approaching the river. Crossing low-lying bridges is not advised. Additionally, property owners, including those with livestock, in proximity to the river banks are advised to take precautions during the ongoing water releases.
